Non Material Benefits of Bio Diversity

Non Material Benefits of Bio-Diversity: Non-material benefits of biodiversity include spiritual and aesthetic values, knowledge systems and the value of education.

1. Business and Industry: Biological resources are source of raw material to many industries. Many industrial inputs, like building materials, fibres, dyes, rubber and oil, are derived directly from biological sources. Biodiversity is also vital to the sustenance of resources such as water, timber, paper and fibre and food. As a result. biodiversity loss could be a potential threat to our business development and to long term economic sustainability.

2. Leisure, Cultural and Aesthetic Value: Biodiversity enriches leisure activities such as hiking, bird watching or natural history study. Besides this, inspires musicians, painters, sculptors, writers and other artists. Moreover, activities such as gardening, fish keeping and specimen collecting also depend on biodiversity. Above all, biodiversity has huge aesthetic and spiritual value to the humankind.

3. Other Services: Apart from providing visible services, biodiversity also serves the ecosystem and the humankind in myriad invisible manners. It plays an important role in regulating the chemistry of our atmosphere and consistent water supply. Biodiversity is directly involved in purification of water, recycling nutrients and ensuring fertility of soils. Besides this, it provides stability to the ecosystem by protecting the latter against disruption by extreme weather or human exploitation.

However, burgeoning populations and society's growing consumption of resources have led to a rapid loss of biodiversity, thereby eroding the capacity of earth's natural systems to deliver essential goods and services to the human community. Unfortunately, the rate of extinction has been raised to 1,000 times its usual rate by human activities. If this continues, the earth will experience the direst consequences, which, perhaps, could not be rectified by technological advancements.
